Information for students of Collegium Medicum of the Nicolaus Copernicus University
Academic teachers of the Department of Otolaryngology and Laryngological Oncology conduct didactic classes at the Faculty of Medicine for students in the field of otolaryngology implemented in three modules:
- Selected problems of the respiratory system with elements of oncology.
- Audiology and phoniatrics.
- Otoneurology.
We prepare students for:
Mastering the principles and skills of performing a full subjective and objective examination in otolaryngology.
Acquisition of knowledge in the field of otolaryngology implemented as part of the three modules.
Leading topics and issues to be discussed:
- Medical tools and equipment, rules and technique of research.
- Acute otitis media – external and middle. Complications of inflammation. Paracentesis, in-the-ear dressings, external dressings, anesthesia. Applying dressings, rinsing ears, removing foreign bodies. Narrowing of the ear canals.
- Chronic otitis. Diagnosis and treatment of facial nerve disorders. Surgery. Tympanoplasty, reconstructions – limitations and possibilities.
- Hearing loss – diagnostics, possibilities of prostheses. Cochlear implants, BAS, ABI, middle ear implants. Universal newborn hearing screening programme. Ototoxic drugs. Genetics of hearing loss. Birth defects.
- Diseases of the nose and paranasal sinuses. Conservative treatment and surgical techniques.
- Diseases of the mouth, throat and salivary glands. The role of HPV. Sialoendoscopy, surgical treatment of salivary glands.
- Pathologies of the larynx and trachea. Tracheotomy, tracheostomy, laryngectomy. Management of the patient after tracheotomy, esophageal probe. Laryngeal nerve damage, hoarseness. VLS, NBI.
- Neck – tumors, congenital cysts, lymphadenopathy, fistulas. Scalp and neck tumors.
- Balance disorders – disease entities, diagnostics, diagnosis verification, differentiation from central disorders.
